It’s National Library Week!

It’s National Library Week!

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. All types of libraries – school, public, academic and special – participate.

In addition, National Library Workers Day is celebrated the Tuesday of National Library Week (April 13, 2010), and is a day for library staff, users, administrators and Friends groups to recognize the valuable contributions made by all library workers.

In the mid-1950s, research showed that Americans were spending less on books and more on radios, televisions and musical instruments. Concerned that Americans were reading less, the ALA and the American Book Publishers formed a nonprofit citizens’ organization called the National Book Committee in 1954. The committee’s goals were ambitious.   They ranged from “encouraging people to read in their increasing leisure time” to “improving incomes and health” and “developing strong and happy family life.”

In 1957, the committee developed a plan for National Library Week based on the idea that once people were motivated to read, they would support and use libraries.   With the cooperation of ALA and with help from the Advertising Council, the first National Library Week was observed in 1958 with the theme “Wake Up and Read!”

National Library Week was observed again in 1959, and the ALA Council voted to continue the annual celebration. When the National Book Committee disbanded in 1974, ALA assumed full sponsorship.

As you can tell from its history, National Library Week began as a way to encourage people to use their libraries and to read. However, who knew 52 years ago that libraries would become much more than a book warehouse. The Davenport Public Library does offer reading and literacy experiences for all ages, but we also offer computers, special events, community rooms, wi-fi internet access, and a range of services available to anyone, confidentially and without discrimination. HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIBBY!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIBBY!

Our much-loved library mascot turns two on Saturday!  Libby the Library Dog is celebrating her big day in style, with a giant birthday party that everyone is invited to attend.  The festivities will start at 2:00 pm on April 10th at the Fairmount Branch (3000 N. Fairmount St.) of the Davenport Public Library.   We’ve already gotten some pretty exciting RSVPs.  Here are a few of the special guests that will be wishing Libby a Happy Birthday this Saturday:

Sports fans, you don’t wanna miss this party since one of Libby’s best friends is none-other-than the world’s most famous Hawkeye, Herky the Hawk!  Herky confirmed yesterday that he wouldn’t want to miss Libby’s big day.  The biggest sports enthusiasts here in the Quad Cities have also RSVP’ed.  Resident cheer-captain of the Quad City River Bandits baseball team, Rascal the River Bandit, and Mo Mallard of the Quad City Mallards hockey team will both be whooping it up with Libby.

Libby will get some puppy love from the biggest of all book-loving dogs out there, Clifford the Big Red Dog.    And Happy the Dog from Happy Joe’s will be woofing it up, too!  We sure hope that the party doesn’t go to the dogs, but Libby assures us that she and the rest of the dog pack will keep the barking to a minimum.

Other guests include Monkey Joe from Monkey Joe’s, Scrubby Bear from the American Red Cross, Charlie Corpuscle from the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center, Bongo the Monkey from Bungle Jungle, Niabi Bobby from the Niabi Zoo, the Chik-Fil-A Cow, Wendy from Wendy’s, and Showtime Pal from Davenport Junior Theater.

Stop by the Fairmount Branch at 2:00 pm to join in the crazy celebration.  Sing Happy Birthday to Libby, dance it up with Libby and her friends, and have some cake and punch.  Bring your camera — you just may get a picture with one of the mascots. There will be loads of giveaways, and loads of laughs, so don’t miss out!
