SCOTT COUNTY READS EVENT EXPLORES SWEDISH IMMIGRATION TO THE QUAD CITIES!

SCOTT COUNTY READS EVENT EXPLORES SWEDISH IMMIGRATION TO THE QUAD CITIES!

In conjunction with the Scott County Reads Together initiative, the Davenport Public Library and the Scott County Iowa Genealogical Society are hosting Christina Johansson of the Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center on Monday, April 5, at 7:00 p.m., at the Main Library (321 Main Street).

Attendees will hear an informative lecture about “Swedish Immigration to the Quad Cities.” Why was there an influx of Swedish immigrants to our area? How did that shape the area in which we live? This program celebrates our likenesses and differences in what it means to be a Midwesterner.

Johansson’s lecture also complements this year’s Scott County Reads Together selection, Man Killed by Pheasant: And Other Kinships, by John Price. In his memoir, Price describes his Swedish family and how they have impacted his life. The lecture is an ancillary event leading up to Price’s residency happening April 12 -15, 2010. Check with your local library to reserve a copy of the book.

For more information about this program, call Davenport Public Library’s Richardson-Sloane Special Collections Center at 563-326-7902. For more information about the Scott County Reads Together initiative and the John Price residency, visit www.librariestogether.org. All programs are free and open to the public.

This residency and the ancillary programs are made possible by grants from Humanities Iowa and the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend. Other sponsors include: Libraries Together, Friends of Bettendorf, Davenport, LeClaire, and Scott County libraries; St. Ambrose University, Midwest Writing Center, Scott Community College, WVIK About Books, and the Thomas Edison Education Center.
