Thanks to a joint sponsorship from the Iowa Bankers Association and Iowa Credit Union League, junior high school students have an opportunity to win a little cash for college during Money Smart Week 2010.
This year’s Money Smart Kids essay contest opens January 15 for youth in sixth, seventh and eighth grades. To enter the essay contest, simply write a 300-word (or fewer) answer to this question:
Credit cards can cause heartache, but they are also convenient. How do you think credit cards should be used, and when do you think you need one?
The winner will receive a $1,000 College Savings Iowa account, and will be invited to read his/her essay during the Money Smart Week kickoff breakfast events. Send essays to Stephanie Cardwell, Iowa Credit Union League, PO Box 10409, Des Moines, IA, 50306-0409. Entries can also be emailed to: email@example.com. Essays must be received by April 1, 2010. There is no entry fee.
Money Smart Week 2010 runs April 17 – April 24. It is an economic outreach program of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, who partners with many local organizations and businesses. Many events on personal finance topics such as saving, investing, and credit are hosted throughout the week. Keep an eye on the Library’s web “Calendar of Events,” found at www.davenportlibrary.com for more information about upcoming programs.
