Why do people mark anniversary milestones in 5 year increments? Forget that nonsense, I’m celebrating 8 years… 8 glorious years of Bookclub In a Box!
In 2001, after leading the library-sponsored “Between the Lines” book discussion group for 3 years, it occurred to me that we might be able to reuse the books we discussed. Up until that point we’d sell the old titles and make a little money for the FRIENDS. Although our hardworking FRIENDS can always use donations for Library enhancements (hint hint – www.friendsofdavenportlibrary.org), selling multiple copies of one title seemed a little extreme. So, why not spread the wealth? If it’s good for one book discussion group, it’ll be good for many more! I created a logo, bought some durable boxes, came up with some guidelines and wah-lah – everything you need to organize and maintain your own book discussion group, with a 6 week checkout period!
Eight years later and it’s still going strong! In fact, you might notice other libraries doing something similar – Bettendorf Public Library, Moline Public Library, and Rock Island Public Library all offer book discussion kits. And the beauty of belonging to the Prairie Area Library System is that you and your book group can check out these items, too!
Thanks to Reference Librarian, Tana, for adding some new kits (and discarding the old!). If you’re looking for our list of titles, download our latest Bookclub In A Box flyer! I hope you and your group are enjoying our Bookclub In A Box!
