Cinco de Mayo at the Davenport Public Library

Are you one of the many people celebrating Cinco de Mayo today or did you celebrate a little early?  The Davenport Public Library is doing a little of both.  This past Saturday, May 2nd, the Davenport Public Library – Fairmount Street had a wonderful Cinco de Mayo celebration with puppets, music, chips & salsa, crafts and more.  The Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre Company put on two wonderful performances of “Stories and Cuentos.”   They included two classical Mexican animal tales. The Rabbit and the Moon, a well-known myth, gives a whimsical explanation for the shadows we see in the moon, while delighting audiences with the age old battle of wits between rabbit and coyote. The Musical Ant, a lesser known tale, follows Hormiguita (little ant) as he learns to play the piano and brings peace to his ant colony through music.  Eulenspiegel Puppeteers then gave a spectacular shadow puppet workshop, featuring creatures from under the sea.  Be sure to check out some of the children’s creations of these sea animals on the slide show.  There were also other crafts, Mexican relia, and story boards from the 2007 Stories 2000 festival that featured the Mexican Heritage.  The Davenport Public Library would also like to send out a big THANK YOU to Azteca Restaurant on Brady Street for donating the awesome chips and salsa!  Then today, the employees of the Davenport Public Library are having a Cinco de Mayo celebration over lunch.  Everything from chips, salsa, tacos, enchiladas and more were provided by staff.
