Celebrate ‘Cinco de Mayo’ at DPL

The Davenport Public Library is hosting a huge Cinco de Mayo celebration on Saturday, May 2, at the Fairmount Street Library (3000 N. Fairmount Street). The nationally recognized Eulenspiegel Puppet Company will present shows and a puppet-making workshop, Casa Guanajuato will provide information about Hispanic culture, and Azteca Restaurants will provide free chips and salsa.

The celebration kicks off at noon, with the Eulenspiegel Puppet presentation of “Stories & Cuentos.” This performance includes two classical Mexican animal tales. The Rabbit and the Moon, a well-known myth, gives a whimsical explanation for the shadows we see in the moon, while delighting audiences with the age old battle of wits between rabbit and coyote. The Musical Ant, a lesser known tale, follows Hormiguita (little ant) as he learns to play the piano and brings peace to his ant colony through music. An encore performance of “Stories & Cuentos” will also take place at 3:00 p.m.

Between 1:30 and 2:30 p.m., the Eulenspiegel Puppet Company will do a hands-on puppet-making workshop in which children will create their own puppets. This portion will limited to the first 40 participants.

Between noon and 3:00 p.m., Casa Guanajuato, a Moline-based cultural community center that provides cultural enrichment to the community, will be on-hand to display cultural items from Mexico, answer questions, and distribute information.  There will also be crafting areas for families, snacks, and real-life-objects from Mexico that participants can view.

Plan to spend the afternoon at Davenport Public Library’s Fairmount Street location on May 2, for the first-ever Library “Cinco de Mayo” party. All events are free and open to the public. If you have questions, please contact the Youth Services at 563-326-7832.
