Interactive History Day

HONORING GRANDPARENTS AND HISTORY

Join us at Davenport Public Library’s Fairmount Street location (3000 N. Fairmount Street) for an all day extravaganza honoring history and grandparents. Our first-ever “Interactive History Day” will take place on Saturday, September 6, from 10 am – 4 pm both inside and outside of the Library.

Scheduled to appear:

10:00 am – Stage performance by the Putnam Museum

10:00 – 2:00 pm – Horse & buggy rides

10:00 – 4:00 pm – Historical Crafts & Story Times

10:00 – 4:00 pm – Teach your grandparent how to DDR, Wii, & become a “Guitar Hero”

10:00 – 4:00 pm – Civil War Live Display, including cannon fire

10:00 – 4:00 pm – Richardson-Sloane Special Collections’ display of local history

10:00 – 4:00 pm – How to find history online

11:30 am – Stage performance by the Putnam Museum

12:00 – 4:00 pm – Bob Welch, “Songs & Stories of the Civil War”

11:00 – 2:00 pm – Lunch food available for purchase from the mobile Hy-Vee grill. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Teen Volunteer Council and other Library programs.

This event was created to honor grandparents during the weekend of Grandparent’s Day, which is always the first Sunday after Labor Day. Grandparent’s Day was created for three purposes: to honor grandparents; to give grandparents the opportunity to love their children’s children; and to help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer, making this the perfect time to enhance communication between generations. The history presented at this intergenerational, hands-on program begins with the Civil War-era and ends with modern technology. Not only will grandparents teach children about the past, but children can teach their elders about the future with a lesson in gaming. This completely free event also highlights the mission of the Davenport Public Library – to connect a diverse community to resources that inform, enrich, educate and entertain.
