Baby Lit Bits

Between 12 and 24 months your baby will change and grow so much.  This is the time for movement and action and trying out EVERYTHING.  You may wonder if your child will ever be able to sit still!  Don’t worry – eventually they land.  So how do you get in quality reading time with your active baby?  Choose short books with simple rhymes and predictable texts.  Don’t force reading time but when you see your child start to wind down, take advantage of it and grab a book and wait for them to be ready to relax.   Create the opportunity and let them settle into it.  Don’t get upset if they want to turn the pages or don’t want to sit for the entire book.  The world is too exciting and there are so many things to do and see!  Don’t be surprised if you find yourself reading the same book over and over and over again.  Most young ones like the comfort of repetition.  This is also the age that settling into routines can help a child move more easily from one activity to another.  Remember that bedtime routines that include storytime will help your child look forward to ending the day, and I’m betting that you will look forward to that special time too!
