Freaky Funky Friday: Tastes like feet

Butterflies taste with their feet…..just let that sink in for a moment. While it may seem gross to you, butterflies don’t have mouths like we do, they have proboscises (a long, straw-like mouth parts) which don’t have any taste sensors. By having taste sensors located on their feet, they can immediately tell if the plants they land on would make good food for their caterpillars should they choose to lay their eggs there.
