Say What?

If you drop a water balloon from the top of a building it might go “splat!” when it hits the ground.  But hundreds of years ago, the word “splat” meant something else entirely.  ”Splat” was the word for the piece of wood on which you rest your back when you are sitting in a chair.  In the Middle Ages people used to sit on benches more than chairs, and chairs were considered special pieces of furniture.  Important guests were invited to use the special benches with “splats” and were called “chair men.”
