Freaky Funky Friday: Sharks with Lightsabers

Just when you thought it was safe to go backĀ into the water; here come sharks with lightsabers. Sort of. The velvet belly lantershark (Etmopterus spinax) is a small species of shark from the deep waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. This shark has spines on its back that it lights up through a process called bioluminescence. Scientists believe that the lighted spines are a way for the shark to warn predators away. The force is strong with this one.
