So, how do you tell time? The first inventions to tell what time of day it was were sundials and shadow clocks, invented by the ancient Babylonians and Egyptians. The problem? They only worked during daylight. The Greeks and Chinese solved this problem by inventing water clocks that worked at night as well as during the day. You couldn’t strap them to your wrist or put them in your pocket, but at least you could tell the time after sunset.
