By the year 1900, the main way of getting around was the trolley. Electric trolleys were speedy, safe, and efficient. But, they presented a problem. While they were a great invention for men wanting to get around, women and girls were stuck. Why? Back then women wore very long skirts. Getting onto a trolley was so difficult for them that high schools had classes that taught young ladies how to get on and off a trolley in a long skirt without getting stuck.
